My uncle told me to take the first job offer after college, no matter what

He said I needed experience fast and shouldn't be picky. So I accepted a marketing role in Austin that paid $38,000 a year, even though I wanted to work in data. After six months, I was miserable and my skills were getting rusty. I finally quit and landed a data analyst position that fit me way better. I learned that some advice, even from family, doesn't fit your own goals. What's a piece of career advice you were given that you're glad you didn't follow?

$38k in Austin sounds like a fast track to living on ramen. Glad you ditched that advice for something that actually uses your brain.

Remember your own gut over their "wisdom".
