I thought networking was just awkward small talk until a guy I met at a Denver conference last fall sent me a job lead.

I always figured my work should speak for itself, but after three months of applying online with no calls, I gave his contact a shot. The hiring manager told me my resume would have been filtered out by their system without the referral. Has anyone else had a referral make that big of a difference in getting past the first step?

Read an article last year that said referrals account for about 30% of hires but get 40% of the interview offers. It's crazy how many resumes just vanish into those automated systems. Your story is exactly why I finally started asking my old coworkers for leads. It feels weird at first, but it's not really about your work speaking for itself anymore. The system is built to filter people out before a human even looks. A referral is basically a human bypass for that first electronic gate.

My work speaks for itself, but only after my friend's name gets it past the robot guard.
