My sister's apology request made me question the whole public shaming thing
Last month my sister asked me to post a public apology to a group chat she was kicked from for a bad joke. She said it was the only way they'd let her back in. I told her no, that apologizing to people who don't want to hear it just feeds the cycle, and she called me a enabler. That conversation sat with me because I've seen how quick we are to demand someone grovel on social media without ever asking if it's actually about growth or just control. Has anyone else refused to play along with the apology ritual and gotten called out for it?

Watch how people treat the cashier who gets their order wrong or the waiter who forgets a refill. Same energy, different setting. Public shaming is just the online version of making someone perform their regret for you so you can feel powerful for a minute. The people demanding the apology never actually want to hear it, they want to see the person squirm and prove they lost. It's not about fixing anything or learning anything, it's about showing who's got the upper hand in that moment. Your sister got caught in that trap and thinks groveling is the price of admission, but that just teaches everyone that loud outrage wins over honest conversation. You did the right thing by not feeding that machine, even if it cost you some family peace.
