Got unfriended by 12 people after posting a political opinion last month

I used to stay totally quiet online about anything controversial, but after that George Floyd summer I just felt like I had to say something. Lost a bunch of high school connections but oddly feel lighter now. Anyone else have their social circle shrink after speaking up?

Started noticing the same thing happening with my group chats too. It's like we all used to just nod along to keep the peace, but now any real opinion and people just disappear. Makes you wonder how many of those connections were even real in the first place. Kind of realizing that quiet friendships built on avoiding tough topics aren't really friendships at all.

Yeah and it's like, once you stop agreeing with everyone they just ghost you. I've lost a few people that way myself and it stings at first but then you realize they were never really there for you anyway. It's better to have a few real friends who can handle when you disagree than a bunch of people who only like the version of you who keeps quiet. The silence tells you everything you need to know about who actually cares.
