Got canceled by my own neighborhood group for a joke about the HOA

Last Tuesday I posted a meme in my neighborhood Facebook group making fun of the HOA's new rule about porch furniture colors. Within 3 hours, someone screenshotted it and sent it to the board, and now I'm getting called out in the monthly newsletter. I've lived here for 7 years and never got so much as a warning, but one lighthearted joke and suddenly I'm the bad guy. It got me thinking, how many of us are one dumb comment away from losing our local standing? Has anyone else been dragged by their own community over something they thought was harmless?

You ever think you know a place, then one thing happens and it shows you it's a lot less forgiving than you figured? I used to think neighborhood stuff was mostly harmless, that everyone understood a joke when they saw one. But after watching a buddy of mine get shunned at the church potluck over a silly comment about the lawn mowing schedule, I changed my mind. These groups run on a kind of unspoken code, and breaking it, even by accident, can flip a switch you didn't even know existed. The funny thing is, people will forgive a lot in private, but once it's in writing and shared around, it turns into something way bigger than you meant it to be.
