Got called out at my cousin's wedding for a joke I made in 2019, and it made me rethink who actually decides when you're forgiven
Last Saturday at my cousin's wedding in Saco, Maine, a guy I barely know brought up a joke I posted online back in 2019 and said half the room still thinks I'm a jerk for it. The weird part is I already apologized for it two years ago, in public, and the person it was about told me we were fine. But this guy acted like the apology never happened, like the internet keeps its own permanent record no matter what the actual human says. I spent the whole drive home wondering who gets to close the book on something, the person you wronged or everyone watching. Has anyone else had somebody drag up old stuff after the person involved already moved on?
Here's the thing though. Maybe the apology isn't yours to call finished just because the guy said you two were cool. The room saw the joke too, and they don't get to unsee it. People have a right to feel how they feel about stuff you put out there. An apology that's about you wanting the story closed is sorta just damage control. If half the room still thinks you're a jerk, that's their call to make, not yours. Maybe what you said in 2019 told them something about you that one sorry later can't erase, and you kinda have to live with that.
