Faced a choice: delete my 8 year old tweet or lose my job, I deleted it and I still feel gross about it
Six months ago my manager pulled me into a room and showed me a tweet I posted in 2016 that someone had dug up, a dumb joke that aged badly. HR gave me two options: delete the tweet and post an apology, or get written up and lose my shot at a promotion. I deleted it, posted the apology, and got the promotion, but three coworkers still bring it up in meetings like I'm on probation. The worst part is the tweet wasn't even that bad, it was just old, and I folded in about 4 minutes. Has anyone else picked the apology just to keep their job and felt like a coward for it?
