TIL solar panels are a huge trend at campsites now

I was out at Willow Creek last weekend and SAW like eight groups with portable solar chargers. They were powering phones and lanterns without any fuss. It hit me that camps are getting way more high-tech than before. I've always just used batteries, but this seems SO much better. Is it really worth the investment for occasional camping? What features matter most in a solar setup? I'd appreciate any tips from folks who've made the switch.

Yeah, when clairem47 said "tiny, silent power plant," that's mostly right but the panel itself is quiet, not the whole setup. The power bank or inverter can have a fan that makes noise when charging. Also, they really need direct sun, so cloudy days or shaded campsites cut the power a lot. For occasional use, it's worth it if you pair the panel with a good battery to save up juice. Focus on getting something durable and easy to carry, not just the biggest watt number. What's the tree cover like where you usually camp?

How many trips do you take a year? I ask because I finally got a 100-watt panel and a small power bank after clinging to my old battery packs for way too long (I felt like a caveman rubbing sticks together). For maybe four or five weekend trips, it's perfect for keeping my phone and a small light going without worry.

Oh man, I can totally picture you with those old battery packs. That's not being a caveman, that's like being a museum curator for dead tech. My friend was still using one that made a high-pitched whine and got so hot you could fry an egg on it. Your new setup sounds legit though, a hundred watts is serious business. You've basically graduated from hunting and gathering to having a tiny, silent power plant.
