Serious question, why does everyone say a 0 degree bag is fine for winter? The tag on my Marmot Trestles said its limit rating is for survival, not comfort.

I checked the EN/ISO testing specs and a 'limit' rating means a cold sleeper will be shivering. Has anyone else actually looked at the fine print on their bag's tag?

Yeah, that fine print is the whole thing. I mean, a zero degree bag rated to the limit is basically saying you won't die, but you'll have a miserable night. It's wild they market them like that. You really need to look for the comfort rating, which is usually way higher, like 15 or 20 degrees for a bag labeled zero. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather pack a warmer bag than trust the survival number.

So do they hand out free thermoses of misery with those zero degree bags? Cause it sounds like you're paying extra for the privilege of shivering all night.

My buddy learned that the hard way on a Boundary Waters trip, and @caleb_stone is right about checking the comfort rating first.
