Hot take: Portable coffee makers are a waste of pack space.

I mean, some campers love having fresh coffee with gear like French presses, but idk, instant packets work fine and save room. Maybe it's just me, but what do you think?

My last trip I saw a guy using a collapsible silicone drip cone that weighed less than an ounce. Still seems like extra steps for cold water and messy grounds though.

Honestly, I'm right there with you. I carried a little French press for years, feeling very fancy about my camp coffee. Then one rainy morning I had to clean wet grounds out of it and just gave up. The instant packets have gotten a lot better than they used to be, and it's one less thing to pack and worry about breaking. I save the nice coffee for when I'm home with a real kitchen to clean up in.

My buddy Dave brought a pour-over setup on a backpacking trip once. Watching him try to rinse the filter in a freezing creek while his hands turned blue was all the convincing I needed. Some luxuries just aren't worth the hassle when you're already out of your comfort zone.
