From gas light purist to LED believer: my embarrassing camp story

I always hated LED lanterns, thinking they ruined the camping vibe. Then my gas lantern quit on a remote trip. I struggled with a dim flashlight until I borrowed a buddy's LED. Now I carry one every time, and I admit it's a lifesaver. Still miss the hiss of gas, though.

Honestly I was the same way about keeping the gas lantern tradition alive. But mine ran out of fuel on a solo trip last fall, and that little LED headlamp was all that kept me from walking into a creek. I do still love the warm glow, but you can't beat always having light.

Gas lanterns have a charm that LEDs just can't match. The warm light and gentle hiss create a real camping atmosphere that feels authentic. Sure, they need fuel and care, but that's part of the experience. I'd rather deal with that than have a cold, bright LED ruin the mood.

My buddy swore by gas until his lantern died, and my LED saved his whole trip in the pitch black.

On a trip to Bryce Canyon, my gas lantern flickered out right after sunset. I dug out my backup LED from the bottom of my bag. Now I keep it in my pocket, and the lantern stays on the picnic table.
