After a storm caught me off guard, I realized my cheap poncho outlasted my buddy's high-end gear.

I was on a weekend trip with friends, and we got hit with heavy rain. Everyone had those pricey waterproof jackets, but I just had a old poncho. They were soaked through in an hour, while I stayed dry. In my experience, sometimes the basic stuff works just as well, if not better. Your mileage may vary, but I'm sticking with my poncho for now.

Yeah, joseph_allen has a point about maintenance. I had the same thing happen with bike lights. Bought a really fancy set that claimed to be waterproof, followed all the care stuff, and they still fogged up and died in a month. My old basic set, the cheap ones, they just keep going through everything. Makes you wonder what you're really paying for sometimes, you know? That poncho story totally checks out.

Honestly though, was his gear actually that good or just not maintained right?

Hold on, what if the gear was actually fine but just totally wrong for his body type? Like, a backpack could be well-made but the wrong size for his frame, causing strain and wear. Even with perfect care, that mismatch would lead to problems quickly. So the issue might not be quality or maintenance, but poor personal fit from the start. We often overlook how individual anatomy affects gear performance. It's easier to blame the equipment than admit we chose badly...
