A guy at the Columbus camera show showed me his shutter tester made from a $4 Arduino
I drove up to the Columbus camera show last month and got stuck talking to an older repair guy named Walt at his table for almost an hour. He pulled out this little box he built from a cheap Arduino kit and two photo sensors, and it read curtain timing on a Spotmatic right there on the spot. I was using my old ear-and-eyeball trick at the time, so I watched him check four bodies in the time it took me to do one. I ordered the same parts that night for $11 total and had my own version running by Sunday. Has anyone else gone this route, and do you mount the sensors on a jig or just tape them to a lens cap?
Taping them to a lens cap works fine for a quick check but the readings drift once the tape gets warm or you bump it, so a simple jig really does pay off. I cut a scrap of plywood with a slot for the body and drilled two holes at a fixed distance, and now my numbers repeat within a hair every time. If you want to go further, add a third sensor so you can watch the mirror and both curtains at once.
