Tried to be clever with a domino joiner and ended up with a shelf full of extra holes

Saw a guy on Youtube who did the same thing with a biscuit joiner. He ended up turning the mistakes into a design feature, said it looked "rustic." Bet you could do the same, fill the extra holes with contrasting wood plugs or something. Might look intentional if you space them out right. That's the thing with joiners, they take practice to get the placement down.

Have you tried filling the extra holes with something like contrasting dowels? @danielmason has a point about marking centerlines first, that trick saves a lot of headaches. It stinks when a clever idea ends up with extra holes, but at least you can patch it up and call it a practice piece.
