The $60 dehumidifier that made my closets smell like a swamp
Bought one of those small rechargeable dehumidifiers from the hardware store in Portland last fall, figured it would help with the musty air in my apartment's storage closet. After about 2 weeks I opened the door and it honestly smelled worse, like damp earth and old socks mixed together. Turns out the unit was just recirculating moisture instead of pulling it out, and the little water tank had a crack I didn't spot until it dripped all over my winter coats. I tossed it and went back to the big plug-in kind that I have to empty every 3 days, which is annoying but at least works. Has anyone else had luck with those mini dehumidifiers or are they all just junk in a plastic case?
