The $200 espresso grinder that got schooled by a $20 hand cranker in Denver
I was bragging to a guy at the Denver flea market about my fancy electric grinder, and he just laughed, handed me his beat-up hand crank, and said 'run a pound through this and tell me your beans taste better.' After ten minutes of wrist pain and uneven grounds, I realized my expensive machine was doing the same mediocre job. He told me he bought that thing at a garage sale in 1998 and it still outworks anything with a motor. Has anyone else had a cheap tool embarrass their pricey one like that?

Wait, 1998? That thing is older than my teenager. I had a similar thing happen with a rusty hand plane I picked up for five bucks at an estate sale, it made my fancy new one look like a toy. The blade was so worn it had this weird curve to it, but it still took off thinner shavings than my expensive one ever did. I spent an afternoon just testing it on scraps, half convinced the old guy who sold it to me had cast some kind of spell on it.
