PSA: my $30 air mattress deflated every night until I tried a rug pad
I camp maybe 5 times a year, so I thought spending big on a mattress was dumb. Kept buying these cheap ones from the big box store, and every single night I woke up on the ground by 3 AM. Thought it was a leak, patched it twice, nothing. Turns out the cold ground was pulling the heat out and the air was just condensing inside, dropping pressure. Last trip to Big Bend I put a $12 rug pad under it, and I slept till 7 AM for three nights straight. No holes, same mattress. Has anyone else had this happen or am I the only one who blamed the valve for a year? What do you use under yours when the ground gets chilly?

That rug pad trick makes way too much sense to work, but clearly it did.

Honestly that rug pad trick sounded like one of those internet hacks that never actually works. But I tried it last fall on a trip to the Smokies and it was a total game changer. Same cheap mattress, woke up warm and actually on top of the pad instead of the ground. Now I just keep a folded yoga mat in my gear bin for the same reason.
