Am I the only one who bought a $30 cast iron pan at a garage sale in Tulsa and it's outlasted every nonstick I've owned
I grabbed it for $30 at a garage sale in Tulsa about four years ago, rusty and looking like trash, and after a quick scrub it's been my daily pan ever since while three $40 nonstick pans have come and gone. The old guy selling it said his mom cooked on it for decades and to just keep it dry, which sounded like nothing at the time but turned out to be the whole secret. What's the one cheap thing you bought used that outlasted the fancy version?
Read somewhere that cast iron gets better the more you cook with it because the seasoning keeps building up, so you're basically adding a layer every time. That old guy's mom probably put fifty years of layers on that thing and you got it all for 30 bucks. My wife found a $12 bread maker at a church sale that's still going after all her friends burned through their fancy ones in two years. Simple stuff just lasts when there's nothing to break on it.
