Running my own shop versus managing for someone else was night and day
I managed a store in Denver for 5 years and now own my own place. The difference is CONTROL over every choice, like setting our own holiday hours. Which path gave you more real freedom?

So you're telling me the big difference is getting to pick your own holiday hours? Man, after five years of dealing with corporate's stupid open-on-Thanksgiving policy, that alone sounds like winning the lottery. I bet the real freedom isn't just the hours though, it's finally being the one who gets to say "this is a dumb idea" without having to argue with some district manager who's never even mopped a floor. Sure, the stress is all yours now, but at least the bad calls are your own bad calls.

Exactly. How bad were the worst corporate calls?

Wait, they made you work on Thanksgiving? That's actually insane. I thought most places gave up on that years ago. I'd lose my mind having to explain holiday hours to angry customers while my own family's eating pie. Hayden's right, the power to just say "we're closed" has to feel like pure freedom after that.
