That October choice between my sister's wedding and my best friend's ER visit still haunts me
Last October my best friend of 15 years called me in tears from the ER in Des Moines. Her husband had just left her and she needed someone to drive 3 hours to pick her up. Same weekend my sister had her wedding in Omaha and I was the maid of honor. I picked the wedding, told my friend I could come Sunday instead. She said fine, but by the time Sunday rolled around she had already made other plans and basically stopped answering my calls. It's been 8 months now and we've spoken maybe twice, both times short and polite. I know family comes first, but she was there for me through my divorce in 2017 and my dad's heart attack in 2021. Was I supposed to ditch my sister's big day? Has anyone else had to rank a wedding against a friend in crisis, and how did you live with the choice?

Own that choice and stop beating yourself up. Your sister gets one wedding day, and your friend had a bad night but she's still alive. You offered Sunday, that's more than most people would do. She chose to go silent instead of accepting help late, that's on her. Sometimes you just have to accept the fallout and move forward.
