My framing crew's output doubled in 3 weeks after one change to our daily routine
So back in April my two man crew was taking about 9 days to frame a basic 1200 sq ft ranch, and I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why we were so slow. I started writing down when we actually picked up a nail gun vs when we were walking around looking for stuff. Turns out we were losing almost 2 hours a day just hunting for tools and lumber because we had junk piled everywhere. I spent $60 on a rolling cart and a few cheap bins from Harbor Freight, one for nails, one for clips, one for tape and pencils. Three weeks later the same ranch took 6 days, nothing else changed, same two guys, same plans, same weather. Now I'm wondering if I should do the same thing with my truck setup because it's a disaster too. Has anyone else tracked where their actual time goes on site, and did it surprise you too?
Man, the part about walking around looking for stuff hits way too close to home. I once spent 20 minutes looking for my tape measure and it was in my back pocket the whole time, so yeah, I'm basically a pro at wasting my own day. Tracking your time like that is smart though, because most of us just assume we're working hard when really we're just pacing around a messy site. A rolling cart sounds dumb simple but if it got you from 9 days to 6, that's real money in your pocket. Honestly your truck is probably costing you the same way, you just can't see it yet.
