A guy at my local makerspace said he plans his builds around the trash schedule, and now my workshop looks different
I was at the makerspace over on 5th last Saturday, just sanding a small shelf, when this older guy named Ray started talking about how he times his bigger projects around bulk pickup day. He said he has saved close to $600 in lumber over 2 years just by walking the alley on the right morning. At first I kind of laughed, but then he showed me his phone with pickup dates bookmarked for 6 different neighborhoods near downtown. I went out the next Wednesday and found a solid oak table top someone left by a dumpster, which I turned into a workbench top for my garage. The weird part is I have been buying plywood at full price this whole time while perfectly good wood sits on curbs 3 blocks away. My little win this week is finishing that bench without spending a dime on the top. Does anybody else here plan their builds around what gets thrown out, or am I late to this?
