Question about the envelope method vs. a single checking account for budgeting
I've been using a single checking account for years and just tracking everything in my head, which has led to some $200 overdraft fees. Last month I tried the cash envelope system for groceries and eating out, and I stuck to my $400 budget perfectly. But my friend swears by a single account with automatic transfers to savings and says envelopes are too much hassle to carry. Has anyone else found one method clearly better than the other, or do you switch between them depending on the month?

You mention you tracked everything in your head but still got hit with overdraft fees, so how is that working out for you long term? The envelope system forces you to see exactly what you have left before you spend, which seems like the real advantage here. If your friend's automatic transfers work for them, does their method ever let them overspend a category without realizing it until it's too late?

Yo same here! I tried the "just remember it in my head" approach for way too long and it always ended up biting me in the butt with overdrafts. The envelope method is honestly a game changer because it makes the money feel real when you actually see the cash leaving your hand. Your friend's idea sounds good on paper but I feel like with automatic transfers you can still lose track of where you're at mid month. I do a hybrid now where I use envelopes for variable stuff like food and fun money but keep the fixed bills on autopay from checking. It's not perfect but way better than just winging it like before.
