Pro tip: cash in envelopes beat my debit card for groceries and I'm up $180 after 6 weeks
I always used my debit card for food shopping because I liked seeing the balance on my banking app. Problem was I'd stop at the store like 4 times a week and grab whatever, and those little trips added up fast. Six weeks ago I pulled $140 in cash every Friday, put it in an envelope marked FOOD, and left the card at home. First week I ran out on Thursday night and ate rice and eggs, which stunk but taught me something. Now I plan one big trip at Aldi on Sunday and stick to a list. The envelope is almost empty by Friday but it's never gone. My banking app shows I spent $660 on groceries over those 6 weeks, and before I was averaging around $840 for the same stretch. That's $180 I didn't hand over, and I'm not even being that strict. The card just made it too easy to not think about it. Does anyone else do the envelope thing for other stuff too, like gas or fun money? Thinking about trying it for eating out next.
