Was dead set on hostels until a 3am disaster in Barcelona changed my mind

Tbh I was always a hostel person because of the price, like $25 a night in Barcelona seemed unbeatable. But after a guy in my dorm came in drunk at 3am and threw up on my backpack, I finally caved and tried a budget hotel for $55 a night in the same area. Honestly the peace and quiet was worth the extra $30, plus I actually slept and didn't waste my days recovering. Has anyone else made the switch from hostels to cheap hotels and found it worth it?

Oh man, the drunk guy puking on your backpack... that's exactly the kind of thing that broke me too. I was all about hostels in my early 20s until a dude in Prague literally peed in his sleep ON MY SNEAKERS. Not even close to my bag, straight up aimed at my shoes somehow. I booked a cheap hotel the next morning for like $40 and it had my own bathroom and a door that locked from the inside. Never looked back honestly. The money I saved on sleep meds and earplugs alone covers the difference.

The whole "roughing it" thing is so overrated once you realize there's no prize for suffering through stuff you could just pay a little more to avoid. It's like we all get sold this idea that being uncomfortable builds character, but really it just builds resentment.
