My uncle's comment about his $200 grocery bill made me look at my own spending differently

I was over at my uncle's place last Sunday and he showed me his grocery receipt from WinCo. He feeds a family of 4 for around $200 a week and I spend almost that on just myself. He said 'you're not buying food, you're buying convenience' and that stung because it's true. I looked back at 3 months of my bank statements and saw I was dropping $60 a month just on pre-cut veggies and $40 on those single serve oatmeal packets. Has anyone else had a family member call them out on something that forced you to change your habits?

oh man, that pre-cut veggie thing hit home hard for me. my sister called me out for spending like $50 a month on bagged salad mixes and shredded carrots. i started buying whole carrots and a head of lettuce and chopping them myself on sundays while i watch tv. it honestly takes like 15 minutes and i save so much it's ridiculous. for the oatmeal thing, i switched to the big canister of plain oats and just add a spoonful of brown sugar or some frozen berries. tastes way better and costs pennies per serving. the first week felt like a hassle but now it's just part of my routine and my bank account looks way happier.

Dang, that's a good point. @jessicaflores I was the same way, dead set on convenience costing more. I used to think people who said "just chop your own veggies" were being preachy and didn't get how busy life gets. But after my roommate showed me his $150 monthly grocery bill versus my $400 one, I couldn't ignore it. I started buying whole carrots and celery and it actually takes less time than I thought to slice them up. The big can of oats is way cheaper too, I just add some cinnamon and honey now. Saved me about $80 a month and my food actually tastes fresher.
