Why does my Aldi produce go bad in 2 days while the $1.50 bag from the Mexican market down the street lasts a week? | Budget Friendly Meals - Talk Freely
Why does my Aldi produce go bad in 2 days while the $1.50 bag from the Mexican market down the street lasts a week?
I shop at the Aldi on 5th for my weekly run and the bell peppers are always soft by Wednesday. Last month I grabbed a $1.50 bag of limes and jalapenos from the mercado two blocks over and they were still firm 8 days later. Same fridge, same drawer, so it's not me doing something dumb. Is it a shipping thing, a wax thing, or am I just buying the wrong stuff at Aldi? Anyone else notice this with their cheap produce spots?
I always figured the cheap stuff was all the same until I read up on how the big chains pick produce that ships well over stuff that tastes good, meaning it's bred and picked early to survive the truck ride. That Mexican market probably gets fruit from smaller farms that actually let it ripen, so it holds up longer once it hits your fridge. Now I just buy my peppers and limes at the mercado and save Aldi for the dry goods.
