Serious question, did you know about the 50 cent bag of soup bones at the butcher counter?

I saw a guy in line at the grocery in Eugene grab one and ask for a free onion from the produce scraps, then he told me it makes a week of broth. What's your cheapest kitchen trick?

Saving scraps for stock is fine, but it's not a real meal. That's just flavored water. My cheapest trick is a big bag of rice and a dozen eggs. You can make fried rice, egg drop soup, or just a plain bowl with soy sauce. It's actual food that fills you up. Broth alone never kept anyone full for long.

Ever tried adding a handful of rice to that broth while it simmers?

My grandma used to save all her veggie scraps in the freezer for stock.
