I thought dry beans were a waste of time until I did the math on my grocery bill
Last year I rolled my eyes at people who soaked beans overnight because canned ones are like 89 cents and I figured my time was worth more than the savings. Then I added up what I was spending on canned chickpeas and black beans over 6 weeks (about $34 at the Kroger near me) and tried a 2 pound bag of dried ones for $2.19 that made the same amount, and now I have a pot going every Sunday. Am I missing something about why more people don't do this, or is it just the planning ahead that turns folks off?
Oh man this reminds me of when I tried making my own yogurt to save money and ended up with a weird soupy mess that cost more than just buying the tub. My grandma used to keep a big pot of beans going on the back burner all day and I always thought it was just an old person thing. Turns out she was just smarter than me with money the whole time. The planning part is what kills it for most people, you gotta think about dinner the night before instead of at 6pm when you're already hungry.
