Best and worst meal week: spent $28 on Tuesday, wasted $40 on Friday

Last Tuesday I made a killer lentil soup with carrots and onions from the farmers market, all for around $3 a serving. Felt like a budget champ. Then Friday I tried to recreate a fancy pasta dish from a blog and ended up burning $15 worth of cream and cheese. It got me thinking: is it better to stick with simple cheap recipes that always work, or take risks on pricier ingredients that might bomb? Which approach saves you more in the long run?

Oh man, that Friday story hurts to read because I did the exact same thing last month with a truffle butter recipe that ended up in the garbage. Simple and cheap wins for me most of the time, since a guaranteed good meal beats a fancy disaster that wastes good money.

My buddy Mike tried making crab cakes from some fancy blog last weekend. Spent like $40 on crab meat and it all fell apart in the pan. He just ordered pizza and called it a night.
