Warning: my neighbor's 'quick lawn fix' turned into a 3 month nightmare

I live in Austin and last spring my neighbor decided to spray some cheap weed killer on his St. Augustine grass. Two days later his whole lawn was brown and dead, not a green blade left. Turns out he grabbed the wrong bottle from the hardware store, something meant for gravel driveways. He tried to fix it by throwing down new sod, but the soil was so cooked nothing would take. Now three months later he's got this patchy dirt yard with a few sad weeds poking through. I told him to just water it and wait, but he keeps dumping miracle grow on it and making it worse. Anyone else deal with a DIY lawn disaster that got way out of hand?

Burned my own lawn last year with undiluted vinegar, felt like a total clown.
