Unpopular opinion: I used to think talking money was tacky but now I wish people would be more upfront about it.

Five years ago I'd never even mention what I paid for anything, but after getting burned on a $3,500 patio job where the client tried to haggle after the pour, I started telling people my exact rates upfront. Has anyone else found that being blunt about costs actually saves you from bad deals?

Got burned" over a client trying to haggle? That just sounds like you weren't clear enough to start with. A little pushback doesn't mean you need to turn every conversation into a contract negotiation.

Oh sure, because being crystal clear from the start always stops a determined haggler in their tracks. Nothing like a little sprinkle of blame on the victim to make the advice stick, right? Maybe next time I'll send a singing telegram outlining my prices just to be safe.
