Stopped apologizing for my rate, now clients respect the quote

Used to email quotes with a paragraph of excuses about why labor was so high. Last month in Denver, I sent a one-liner quote for a fence job at $2,400 and didn't explain anything. Client asked twice if I could flex, I just said no and held firm. They signed anyway and even tipped the crew. Why are we so scared of asking what our work is actually worth, has anyone here tried just shutting up after giving the number?

The quiet part isn't just about the number, it's about what you don't say after. Every explanation you add sounds like a reason to negotiate, even if it's a good one. The client already knows lumber and labor went up, they just want to see if you'll blink first.
