Took me 11 days to figure out why my neighbor stopped waving, and it was my own dumb rule
So about two weeks back I decided I was done doing the fake how are you thing with people in my building. I live in a 40 unit place in Sacramento and I just stopped saying hi in the hallway, stopped the little nod at the mailboxes, all of it. Felt great for maybe three days. Then my neighbor Dave, who I actually like, flat out stopped waving at me from his truck. I spent 11 days running through everything. Did I leave a bag of trash by his spot? Was it the parking thing from last spring? I even checked if I owed him money, which I did not. Turns out he thought I was mad at him because I quit doing the nod, and he was just matching my energy to be polite. We talked it out on Saturday over his fence and now we do the nod again but we both know it is fake, which somehow makes it better. My question is for people who quit the small talk stuff on purpose, how do you keep it from reading as a fight to the people around you? Because I clearly did not think that part through.
