I finally stopped using peat moss and my plant group is split

Peat moss holds water well, but taking it from bogs hurts those ecosystems. I tried coconut coir instead, but my ferns started drying out faster. Some friends call me a hypocrite for risking my plants over a small change. It's tough when doing the right thing for nature might mess up your garden.

What type of ferns are you growing? I had the same exact problem with coco coir, it just dried out way too fast for my peace lilies. I ended up mixing in some vermiculite to help it hold water longer.

My local nursery actually recommended adding perlite to my fern mix for better water retention.

You're not a hypocrite for trying something better. It just takes time to dial in the right mix. Your ferns will adapt or you'll find a balance that works.
