Dropped $4,200 on a franchise seminar my boss swore would double our shop traffic, and all I got was a laminated workbook
Last September my boss paid for three of us to fly to Dallas for a two day seminar about running a "high performance" auto shop. The ticket alone was $1,400 a head, plus hotel and food, and he promised it would pay for itself in 60 days. What we actually got was a guy in a rented ballroom reading slides off a laptop while his assistant walked around handing out laminated workbooks with fill in the blank lines. Every session ended with a pitch for the $6,000 "advanced" package, and when I asked for real numbers on average ticket size he dodged it twice. Six months later our car count is flat, nothing changed, and my boss still brings it up like it was money well spent. I'm out nothing personally but the shop is out $4,200 plus three days of lost labor, which is close to another $2,000. If your boss ever asks you to go to one of these, ask him for last year's attendee results in writing first. Did any of you actually get a refund or push back on something like this?
Man, is it really that deep though? $4,200 stings but your boss is the one who ate it, not you, and seminars being a letdown is kinda just how it goes.
