TIL a retired librarian was right about my book club pick, but for the wrong reason
Last month I pushed 'The Secret History' on our Chicago book club after my coworker Dave swore it was a slow burn genius. A retired librarian named Margaret warned me the pacing would kill the group, and she was spot on, but not because it's slow. Turns out the real issue was we had 9 members and 3 of them DNF'd by page 100. Has anyone else had a pick where the "too slow" critique was actually masking a different problem like character voice or translation style?
Three DNFs by page 100 is a weird cutoff, so did those people actually say what threw them off or just blame the pacing? I've seen groups where the real killer was the narrator's smug tone or the constant flashbacks, and "slow" becomes the catch-all excuse. What did Margaret say after the meeting when you all compared notes?
