Showerthought: my book club spent 40 minutes arguing about a character's hat instead of the actual ending
So our club met at Denise's place in Akron on Tuesday to talk about this novel where the whole plot hinges on a letter the mom never sends. We had maybe 9 people there and I swear 40 minutes went to whether the author meant the hat on page 30 to be a symbol or if it was just a hat. Then Marcus says the ending was lazy and everyone pounced on him, and the book we were supposed to be debating, the actual final chapter, got like 6 minutes total. What got me was when my friend Priya leaned over and said people don't join book clubs to talk about books, they join to have somewhere to argue safely. That sat with me the whole drive home. I picked this club because I wanted to dig into endings with people, not referee a fight about headwear. Does your club ever finish the book conversation or does it drift somewhere else entirely?
