Rant: Our book club fight over 'The Goldfinch' got way too personal last month

Honestly, our group in Charlotte had a huge blow-up about the ending. Tbh, one member, Sarah, said the main character's choices were 'morally bankrupt' and she couldn't finish it. Ngl, I argued that the messy ending was the whole point, showing how trauma sticks with you. It got so heated she almost left the club. Has anyone else had a book debate ruin a friendship, or is it just us?

Honestly, Sarah's right, the main guy was just making bad excuses.

My old English teacher said Holden's whole deal was untreated trauma, not excuses.

Watched my buddy and his cousin stop talking for a week after a fight about "Catcher in the Rye." His cousin called Holden a whiny rich kid who needed to get over himself, and my friend took it super personal, like he was defending his own teenage self. They were slamming beers and it just escalated from literary critique to bringing up old family stuff. Took a mutual love of football to get them back in the same room.
