Our club picked a 600 page book for December and only 2 people finished it before the meeting
We met at Dana's place in Phoenix last Tuesday and sat around for 20 minutes with nothing to say because nobody wanted to admit they bailed by chapter 4, so I finally just asked if we could vote on a page limit for future picks and now half the group is mad at me for killing the vibe.
Tbh you did nothing wrong, you just said out loud what everyone was already thinking. We had this exact thing happen in my old book club, someone picked Infinite Jest and basically killed the group for two months. What worked for us was setting a soft cap around 350 pages and saving the big ones for a summer read where people had more time. The key is to bring it up as a group problem, not a you problem, like "hey we all seem to struggle with the long ones, can we figure out a system." Some people get weird about it because they feel called out for not finishing, so give them an easy out and make it about keeping the club alive. Half the group being mad now will blow over once the next meeting is actually fun again.
