Our book club's 'The Great Gatsby' talk felt totally different this year

Back in 2019, our group in Austin mostly argued about if Gatsby was a good guy or not. When we read it again last month, the whole debate shifted to the book's treatment of race and class, especially around the character of Tom Buchanan. I think seeing more modern takes online and reading newer books made us look at the old classics with fresh eyes. Has your club had a classic book feel totally new on a second read?

Seriously? It's just a book club chat.

Totally get that shift! I used to focus only on Gatsby's dream, but now I see how the book shows the hollowness of that whole world. Reading it after the past few years made Tom's racism and the careless wealth way more obvious and ugly.
