Our book club split over a 2012 novel and I'm still mad about it
Two weeks ago at the Maple Street library, three of us loved the ambiguous ending and the other five called it lazy writing, so we spent 45 minutes arguing instead of discussing the themes, has anyone else had a book club nearly fall apart over an ending?

Forty-five minutes? That's wild. My group once spent that long arguing over whether a character's dog dying meant the author hated dogs or just wanted a cheap cry, but at least it was a solid 10-2 split. The fact you got a 3-5 tie over an ending, that's the kind of thing that ends friendships, not just book club. Did anyone actually storm out, or was it just loud passive-aggressive silence for the last hour?
