My book club used to pick books by voting, now we just read what the host wants
For two years, we voted on three choices each month, and it felt fair. Last fall, our host in Denver just started announcing her pick a week before the meeting. She said it was 'to save time,' but it means we're stuck with her favorite dense historical fiction every other month. I miss finding new authors together. Has your group ever had one person take over the picks?

My cousin's hiking group in Portland had this happen. They planned trips together for years, then one guy just started emailing out his own crazy hard trail picks every Saturday. It went from fun group hikes to basically just training for his marathon, you know? They lost like half the people after three months of that.

Ugh, that's the worst feeling when a group thing stops being a group thing. It totally kills the fun and makes it feel like homework someone assigned you. My old movie night group got like that, where one friend just picked his weird art films every time and we all had to pretend to get it. Maybe someone just needs to say something before people start quietly leaving like in Ben's story.
