Dropped $12 on a used copy of the book everyone quit on, and it turned our meeting around
Our club picked a 500 page doorstop last spring and only 3 of 9 people finished it, so the meeting turned into 40 minutes of silence and small talk about the weather. Last week I paid $12 at a used shop in Sacramento for a shorter book by the same author, just to test if the problem was him or his page count. Everyone read it, and we argued for 90 minutes about the last chapter, which is more than we said all last season. So now I'm wondering, do you all pick books by length on purpose, or is that just giving in to the slackers?
Man, I gotta say I see it the other way. Picking books by length on purpose feels like letting the people who don't read run the whole club. The real issue was never the page count, it was that everybody had to slog through something dense alone with no help. What if you'd split that 500 pager into chunks and met every two weeks to talk about each part instead of waiting till the end? You'd get the same big book payoff but nobody falls behind because you're all moving together. Length isn't the problem, it's the setup.
