Shoutout to the old timer who showed me how to lay a bead with a 6010 rod on rusty pipe
I spent 3 years using 7018 for everything until he grabbed my stinger and ran a perfect root pass on a 6-inch schedule 80 in 20 seconds flat, has anyone else had a welder completely change how you approach a job?

Changed how you approach a job" is putting it MILDLY. That old timer made me look like I was welding with a fork and a lighter. I wanted to toss my whole hood in the river after seeing what a REAL pro can do with a beat-up machine and some rusty pipe.

Tbh that feeling of wanting to toss your gear is exactly what separates the guys who get good from the ones who stay mediocre. That old timer probably spent years burning rod and making ugly beads before he got to that level. There is no shortcut around the grinder work and the bad days. You have to embrace the suck and keep burning almost every day. That moment when you realize how much you don't know is the moment you actually start learning.
