A tube welder in Beaumont taught me to chalk my grind line and I've done it since
Was on a turnaround in Beaumont back in March and this old tube welder watched me fight a mirror weld for about 20 minutes before he walked over. He grabbed a piece of soapstone and chalked a line right where my grind should stop, said "you can't see the line if you never drew it." Next pass came out clean and I couldn't believe I'd been eyeballing it for 9 years. Now I keep a soapstone in my back pocket on every job and mark my stops before I even strike an arc. Anybody else got a cheap trick like that they picked up from an old hand?
