Walked into a board game cafe in Austin and saw something weird

I was visiting Austin last month and stopped into this place called The Emerald Tavern. What caught me off guard was a group of four guys playing a 6-hour game of Twilight Imperium with a full spreadsheet open on a laptop. They were logging every trade and combat roll into it, which seemed intense but also kind of brilliant. Has anyone else seen players take board games that seriously at a public cafe?

@nelson.nancy probably right, those guys definitely blamed the dice. Saw a similar thing at a cafe here in Denver, group had a whole color-coded battle log for Risk. Kinda makes you wonder if they ever just yell at their own spreadsheet for backstabbing them. Four hours in and they're still arguing over whether a 6 was a natural roll or a UI error. Not my style but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Bet they still blamed the dice instead of admitting their spreadsheet strategy had a glitch. I'd rather just lose like a normal person in half the time.
