Can we talk about how I used to teach board games like a college lecture?

I used to explain every tiny rule before we even started, even the edge cases about tie-breakers and expansions. Then last month at a game night in Portland, my buddy just said 'let's play, we'll figure it out as we go' and we jumped right in. The whole session was smoother, fewer people zoned out, and we finished a 2-hour game in 90 minutes. Why do we think new players need all the details upfront instead of just learning by doing?
