Overheard a barista roast a $9 pour-over, tipped him anyway

At a shop in Portland last Saturday, a guy next to me ordered the $9 single-origin pour-over and the barista told him plain that it tastes like dirty socks compared to the $4 drip they brew fresh. The guy laughed, tipped him five bucks, and walked out with the drip. Is it ever worth paying triple for the fancy version, or are we all just paying for the story?
