Old timer told me to hand wash my cast iron, I used soap for 10 years instead

Finally tried seasoning it from scratch after my dad's 40-year-old skillet started flaking, and now I get why he yelled at me about dish soap. Has anyone else ruined good cookware by ignoring simple instructions from people who actually knew what they were doing?

Burned through three cheap nonstick pans before my grandma finally handed me her old cast iron and told me to stop being lazy with the dish soap. She was right, now that pan's the only one I use for everything.
